I recently attended the Esri Petroleum User Conference and one of the speakers referred to GIS types as “Data Janitors”. It really is such an appropriate term for much of the work we do. I would say that at lease once every week, I need to work with some bad data that needs a little cleansing. It is a GIS professional’s job to make bad data look good! This is why I always feel it is imperative for anyone in GIS to “Know Your Data”!
